Can we talk about how hitting 10,000 in my savings account made me feel worse instead of proud?
I hit that number 3 months ago in my Denver apartment and just stared at the screen because rent is $1,850 and that money is basically 5 months of nothing. Everyone says that's a big milestone but it feels like a finish line that keeps moving.
The number is just a number until you compare it to what it actually buys you, and that's the part nobody warns you about. Saving 10k feels huge until you do the math and realize it disappears in a few months of rent and groceries and you're right back where you started. What you're really bumping into is that the goal was never the point, the point was feeling safe, and 10k in Denver doesn't buy safe. It buys a short runway and a lot of anxiety about how fast it's burning. The moving finish line thing is real too, because once you hit it, the next number is 20k or 6 months of expenses or whatever, and the goalposts just keep sliding. Maybe the win isn't the balance, it's that you proved you can actually save that much in the first place, which means you can do it again.
