I thought meal kits were a total scam for lazy people

My sister sent me a free box from HelloFresh, and after making the creamy dill chicken in 25 minutes, I haven't ordered takeout in a month. Anyone have a favorite recipe from a kit that actually taught them a new cooking skill?

My husband used to call them overpriced TV dinners. Then we got a EveryPlate box with a recipe for crispy pork cutlets. It showed me how to properly bread something using the whole flour, egg, breadcrumb setup in separate dishes. I'd always just dumped everything on the meat before. That method makes a huge difference and I use it for chicken and fish now too.

My neighbor said the same thing about them being for lazy cooks. Then she tried a Blue Apron recipe that had you make a pan sauce by deglazing the skillet with vinegar. She said she'd never done that before and now uses the trick all the time. It's those little skills that stick with you.

Tell that lazy cook excuse to all the stuff I learned. I got a meal kit once for the free shipping and ended up learning how to properly season cast iron. Not even kidding. The recipe card had a little tip about oiling the pan after washing and now my skillet is actually non-stick. Pretty good for a "lazy" person who just wanted dinner.

Read an article about how kits teach knife skills through pre-portioned chopping. That practice gave me the confidence to finally julienne vegetables at home.
