My neighbor told me my 'nice' lawn is a waste of water and I can't stop thinking about it.
I was out watering my grass last Tuesday evening, trying to keep it that perfect green color, when my neighbor Mr. Henderson walked over. He pointed at the sprinkler and said, 'You know, in this Arizona heat, that's just pouring money down the drain. Real grass here is a young person's game.' It really threw me because I always thought having a nice lawn was part of being a good homeowner. Now I'm stuck between two ideas. On one side, I take pride in my yard and it feels like an adult accomplishment. On the other, he's right about the water bill and the constant upkeep. That one comment has me questioning a lot of my choices. Has anyone else had a simple chat make you rethink a basic part of your routine?

Read an article last week about cities in the southwest paying people to rip out their grass. The whole "perfect lawn" thing is a holdover from when water was cheap and everywhere. Mr. Henderson has a point about the Arizona heat, but it's also your yard. Maybe there's a middle ground with some drought friendly plants mixed in.

Paying people to rip out grass? That's wild.

My cousin in Phoenix got a $500 rebate for switching to desert landscaping. Elliot_gibson27, it's not just wild, it's a real policy now because the Colorado River is in trouble. They're basically paying people to stop wasting water on grass that doesn't belong there.
