Saw a 74 year old man bagging groceries at the Kroger in Dayton and it messed with my head
I was there around 9pm on a Tuesday grabbing milk and this older guy named Frank was working the register next to me. He moved slow and his hands shook a little, and he mentioned he picked up the job 6 months ago after his rent went up $200. I keep wondering when the plan is supposed to kick in where you get to rest. Does anyone else have a parent or grandparent still working just to cover bills?
The part about him picking up the job 6 months ago after rent went up $200 really got me, because that's a whole man who did everything right and still can't stop. My mom is 71 and she still does front desk hours at a dentist office three days a week, mostly to keep the lights on and help with her meds. She tells everyone she just likes staying busy, but I know the real reason and it eats at me. He moved slow and his hands shook and he was still there at 9pm on a Tuesday, that's not a guy who wants to be there, that's a guy with no other choice. I don't know when the rest part is supposed to start either, and it scares me that it might never come for a lot of people. All I can say is keep talking to folks like Frank when you see them, because being seen probably means more than we know.
