The 2 AM spreadsheet that finally fixed my bill chaos
Last month I missed a water bill for the third time in a row and got a $45 late fee. I sat down at 2 AM with a plain notebook and wrote down every single due date for the next six months. Then I set three alerts on my phone: one a week before, one the day before, and one the morning of. It sounds dumb but I also put the amount right next to the date so I'm not shocked when I open the app. Has anyone else found a system that actually sticks when your brain just refuses to remember recurring stuff?

Isn't that just what a calendar is for? Seems like extra steps for late fees.

The amount next to the date is the real trick here. Most calendar alerts just say "water bill due" but your brain skips over that because it doesn't hurt yet. When you see $87.50 staring at you, that little sting of reality makes you actually open the app and pay it. @blair_taylor32 calendars work if you check them, and honestly half of us don't until something goes wrong. Another thing that helped me was paying everything on the same day each month, even if it was early for some bills. That way there's only one "bill day" to remember, not six separate ones floating around in your head. Combine that with your amount trick and you've basically got a system that forgives a garbage memory.
