Unpopular opinion: I used to think a budget was just for people who were bad with money.

My wife finally got me to sit down and use a simple spreadsheet six months ago, and I was shocked. Seeing where every dollar from a big pressure washing job actually went, instead of just disappearing, was a wake-up call. We found we were spending over $300 a month on random takeout and subscriptions we never used. Now we're actually saving for a real vacation. Has anyone else had a simple tool completely change how you handle your cash?

How did you set up your spreadsheet? I tried a few apps but they never stuck. Just writing things down in a simple list on my computer made it so much clearer where the money was really going, especially on all those small daily buys that add up. It feels good to have a plan instead of just guessing.

Honestly, I have the total opposite take. A spreadsheet feels like a second job to me, just more admin work. The real game changer was getting a single bank account that auto-sorts my money as it comes in. No manual tracking, it just happens. For me, the simpler the system the better, because if it's a hassle I won't do it. That automatic setup is what finally made saving feel easy.

But that manual check-in keeps me honest...

Just start with one category, like food, and build from there.
