Woke up to a flooded basement because my water heater from 2008 finally gave out
It happened at 3 AM last Tuesday in my house outside Chicago. The tank just split open and dumped about 40 gallons before I heard the noise and ran downstairs. I spent the next 3 hours with a shop vac and towels trying to save my boxes of old photos and holiday decorations. Plumber came by at 8 AM and said the corrosion was so bad he was surprised it lasted this long. Cost me $1,800 for a new unit and installation plus the time off work. Has anyone else had a major appliance fail at the worst possible time like this?

Lmao my dryer died mid-cycle on laundry day once, talk about timing.

Anderson's right, that anode rod replacement every 5 years is a lifesaver if you catch it early.

That 3 AM water heater pop is a brutal wakeup call. I had a similar thing with a 2005 unit and now I check the pressure valve once a month and set a reminder for the anode rod replacement every 5 years. @gracec16 at least you only lost a load of laundry, I had to toss half my Christmas decorations from the 90s.
