Check if your system swapped to a slower power saving mode.

Classic tech support move right there. They tell you to change a setting to fix a slowdown and it just bricks the whole system. Next they'll probably say you need to download more RAM or something. My laptop did that once and started sounding like a jet engine for no reason.
