Appreciation post: how I used to research car repairs vs now
Back in 2015, I'd spend an hour flipping through my Haynes manual or calling around to parts stores to figure out what was wrong with my truck. Now I just pop the hood, take a 30 second video with my phone, and run it through an AI diagnostic tool. It'll spot a bad MAF sensor or vacuum leak faster than any mechanic I ever talked to. I remember paying a shop $120 just to tell me the alternator was dying, and now I can check that myself for free. The change hit me last Tuesday when I fixed a misfire in 20 minutes with a free scan app. Has anyone else noticed how much quicker you can fix things with these AI tools?

Man, you're spot on about the time savings but the real game changer for me is catching stuff before it gets expensive. I caught a failing O2 sensor last month that would have wrecked my cat converter if I'd waited for the check engine light to come on.

Seven years driving a 2008 F150 taught me the opposite lesson actually @keith900. I replaced an O2 sensor based on a code reader saying it was "failing" and it cost me 200 bucks for nothing because the actual problem was just a loose vacuum hose. Those cheap scanners can't tell the difference between a dying sensor and a wiring issue or a bad ground. The check engine light exists for a reason, it's not just a random warning light. Sure sometimes you get lucky and catch something early but I've seen way more people throw parts at their car based on vague sensor readings and end up spending way more in the long run. Preemptive fixes sound good on paper but in practice you're just gambling on what you think is wrong without proper diagnostics.
