I think the AI hype is backwards: small boring tools are beating the flashy demos
Everyone in this community keeps hyping the big flashy models and chat bots, but I saw the opposite happen at my job. Back in March our team was drowning in support tickets, like 60 a day, and we tried one of those fancy AI assistants that writes emails. It was slow and nobody trusted it. Then in June we switched to a tiny tool that just sorts and tags tickets automatically, no chat, no personality. Our response time went from 9 hours to 45 minutes in 6 weeks. The boring tool nobody would put on a stage did more than the shiny one. Am I wrong for thinking the real wins are in these quiet, unsexy tools instead of the big demos?
Ran into the same thing at my last job. We spent weeks testing a chatbot that could answer tech questions in full sentences, and it was cool to watch but people still opened tickets because they didn't trust the answer. Meanwhile some basic script that just routed tickets to the right person cut our backlog almost in half. The flashy stuff gets attention because it looks impressive in a meeting, but the boring tools actually save you time. Your support numbers tell the real story here. Nine hours down to 45 minutes is the kind of win that keeps a team sane, and no one's putting that on a stage.
