Just realized AI voice cloning is way scarier than I thought after my mom's call last night

I always rolled my eyes at people freaking out about AI voice scams. Figured it was just clickbait. Then my mom calls me at 2am crying saying I was in the hospital. Voice sounded exactly like mine. Same pauses, same laugh. She almost wired $500 to some crypto thing. That was 2 days ago and I still feel sick thinking about it. Has anyone else had a close call with this stuff?

My daughter's school sent a robocall last week warning parents about this exact thing happening to three families in our district. The technology is definitely getting better but here's the thing, these scams still depend on people panicking and ignoring common sense. Your mom froze up and almost fell for it, but you both caught it before she sent the money, right?

We actually set up a family code word after that scare... if anyone calls asking for money they have to say the word first. Mom's got it taped to her fridge so she can't forget.
