My short script saved me 8 hours of manual invoice sorting this week

Last month I was drowning in PDF invoices from 40 different vendors, and I finally sat down and wrote a basic Python script to extract the key fields. It took me 3 evenings to get right, but now I just drop files in a folder and walk away. Has anyone else found a small automation that paid off way more than you expected?

My buddy Matt had a similar thing happen with something way smaller. He was a server at a diner and got tired of manually writing down the daily specials on the whiteboard every morning. Spent like an hour making a macro that pulled data from their Google Sheet and updated a little display. The manager thought he was wasting time until they realized it saved maybe 15 minutes a day but that added up to like 5 hours a month. Matt got moved to doing other stuff around the restaurant because they figured he could handle simple tech stuff. Still uses that same macro two years later while the rest of us are still stuck copying things by hand.

Oh man, I gotta respectfully disagree with you there. Fifteen minutes a day is nice but I've seen people go way overboard with automation that ends up causing more trouble than it's worth. My neighbor spent two whole days scripting a system to auto-email invoices and it broke every time a client changed their address format. He ended up having to babysit the thing more than if he just did it manually. Your buddy got lucky that his manager saw the value but most places I've worked at, they'd just pile more work on you because "you're good with computers now." That honeymoon phase where you get to do interesting stuff usually runs out fast.

Dude, that's the dream right there. Honestly, I'd pay good money to have that kind of patience and focus for three whole evenings. Ngl, most of my "automations" are just me setting a timer on my phone so I don't forget to grab something from the back room. That script is legit game changing, you probably saved yourself a huge headache down the road.
