Just realized my frozen fries were turning to mush because I kept shaking the basket every 5 minutes like the old oven instructions said.
It took me 3 months and a ton of soggy potatoes to figure out you only need to shake them once, halfway through. Anyone else have a simple air fryer habit they had to unlearn?

That "shake every 5 minutes" habit is a hard one to break from regular ovens. I was overcooking everything at first because I kept checking and letting all the heat out. The real trick is just leaving it alone until that one halfway point, maybe a quick glance through the window. It feels wrong to not mess with it, but that's how it works best.

Maybe it's the type of air fryer, but a single shake halfway has never been enough for me. My fries end up with one side totally soft unless I give them a good turn more than once. I've found that two quick shakes gets everything evenly crispy without losing too much heat.

Three months of soggy fries is a level of patience I just don't have. I was doing the exact same thing, shaking that basket like it owed me money. The real shocker for me was frozen onion rings, they would just disintegrate into a pile of breading crumbs. It took my partner walking in and asking why I was treating the air fryer like a popcorn machine to finally stop.

Honestly, is it that big of a deal? I get what @robin591 is saying about the heat loss, but we're talking about frozen fries here, not a fancy meal. Mine turn out fine even if I peek a couple times. The whole point of an air fryer is that it's easy and low stress. If shaking the basket makes you feel better, just do it. They'll still be edible.
