Warning: stop putting wet batter in your air fryer, I learned this the hard way
I tried to make onion rings with a wet beer batter last Thursday and it was a disaster, the batter just slid right off into the basket and ran through the holes. I found out the hard way that the batter never sets because there is no oil to fry it, so you end up with raw goop on your onions and a huge mess to scrub out of the drawer. Now I only use dry breading like panko or crushed cornflakes with a light spray of oil, and they come out perfect every time. Has anyone actually made a wet batter work in theirs or is it just not possible?
This is the same trap people fall into with a lot of kitchen gadgets, they buy the thing and then assume it cooks everything the same way. Air fryers are really just tiny ovens with a strong fan, so anything that needs hot oil to set up, like a wet batter, is never going to work no matter how long you leave it in there. It is the exact same reason you can't deep fry in a toaster oven, the heat source is different so the rules are different. Dry coating plus a little oil spray is the only path that makes sense, and honestly it gets you pretty close to the real thing anyway.
