Almost lost a finger to a loose cowling catch

I was doing a walk-around on a Cessna 172 at a small strip outside Austin last Tuesday and a recessed cowling latch I didn't notice snagged my glove. It pulled my hand right into the spinner before I jerked back. Has anyone else gotten bit by those hidden latches or am I just unlucky?

That glove snag story is a good reminder that even the small stuff on a 172 can mess you up. I've had a couple close calls with those recessed latches myself, usually when I'm rushing through a preflight. It's not just bad luck, those things are designed in a way that makes them easy to overlook until they bite you.

Had a buddy who nearly learned that lesson the hard way last summer. He was doing his runup at a quiet little uncontrolled field, glove snags on the throttle latch just as he went to taxi. Next thing he knew, the latch popped open and the throttle slammed back to idle right when he needed power to clear the runway. Lucky for him he caught it before anyone else lined up behind him. @quinncarr is right, those latches are a sneaky design flaw when you're in a hurry.

Boy howdy, are you telling me. I had a similar thing happen to me back in 2019 at a little field in west Texas. I was doing my preflight on a 172 and that recessed latch on the left side of the cowling grabbed my jacket sleeve just as I was bending down to check the oil. It pulled me forward hard enough that I banged my forehead on the spinner before I could get loose. Left a good bruise and taught me to always tuck my sleeves in before I get near the front of the plane. It's amazing how those little catches can hide in plain sight until they decide to grab you.
