Feel your pain, wired is not worth it in old buildings.

I just read this article from a tech blogger I follow about how old buildings often have this nasty combo of knob-and-tube wiring and plaster walls that makes running ethernet a nightmare. They talked about how you can't just drill through fire stops without messing up the whole structure, and you end up with these huge holes you have to patch. Plus, the interference from old electrical systems can mess with your signal in ways that newer houses don't have to deal with. Honestly, that's why I switched to a good powerline adapter setup last year and it's been way less headache than trying to snake cables through my 1920s walls. It's not perfect for gaming latency but for streaming and regular browsing it works fine for me.

Wait, did your friend ever try the powerline adapter thing? My buddy Mike spent three weekends trying to run ethernet in his 1920s bungalow and ended up with six holes in the wall before he gave up. He swapped to a powerline setup, said it was way better than nothing, though his online games still lag sometimes when someone runs the microwave.
