My boss in Dallas told me to always use a 22/4 wire for keypad runs, no exceptions.

He swore it prevented voltage drop on long runs, so I did it for years on every job. Last month I had a retrofit where the old 18/2 was fine and saved a ton of time and material. Has anyone else found that rule to be too rigid, or was my old boss right for most situations?

So what's the actual distance where that 22/4 becomes a must? Like, are we talking a run across a mansion or just a big house? Seems like a waste on a normal install.

Your boss was right for long runs, but voltage drop math beats a blanket rule every time.

That 22/4 on a normal house like anna578 said is wild.

Feel your pain on those long runs. The math never lies but it sure can be a pain to run. Solid point about ditching the blanket rules.
