Shoutout to the installer in Phoenix who showed me his trick for labeling zone wires
He uses a label maker with clear tape and puts the zone number on the wire itself, about six inches from the terminal, instead of just on the panel board. Has anyone else found a better way to keep those service calls under an hour?

My guy uses colored heat shrink tubing.

Colored heat shrink tubing, that's the big tip off? Seems like a stretch. People use that stuff for all sorts of basic projects around the house. Hardly a sign of some master criminal. Maybe the guy just likes his wires organized.

Okay, but hear me out. I had a client whose husband was "organizing wires" with that stuff. Turns out he was rewiring the entire garage security system to bypass it. The specific colors matched a wiring diagram he'd downloaded. It's not the tubing itself, it's the weirdly perfect, professional-looking job for a simple home task. That's the red flag.
