I finally had to pick between two streaming services for local news coverage
After my cable bill hit $180 last month, I cut it and had to choose between Hulu Live and YouTube TV for keeping up with my town's city council meetings. I went with YouTube TV because it had my local NBC affiliate in Portland, which Hulu didn't have. Turns out the app's interface is a nightmare for finding live events, and I missed the hearing on the new bike lane ordinance. Has anyone else struggled with algorithm-curated guides making simple local stuff harder to find?

That "algorithm-curated guides" bit hit me hard because I swear my YouTube TV thinks I want to watch 800 hours of cooking shows instead of my city council zooming in on pothole repairs. I once spent 15 minutes scrolling through "recommended for you" wrestling clips before I finally found the school board meeting buried under a menu that looked like a 90s video game. So yeah, I feel your pain on the bike lane thing, I missed a whole zoning vote because the app decided I wanted highlights from a football game instead.

That article I read last week about "algorithmic civic fatigue" just clicked for me. Totally explains why my feed has 10 videos of someone pressure washing a driveway before any actual local news pops up.

Three times last week I searched for "town council meeting" and my recommended feed still showed me a video about someone deep frying a whole turkey in a wok. @wyatt_mitchell26 I seriously think my TV knows more about my guilty pleasure shows than I do about local government.
