PSA: My Google Maps detour added 45 minutes to a 20 minute drive, is AI routing actually broken?
I was heading home from downtown Portland yesterday, and Google Maps kept suggesting this weird detour down a side street. I ignored it twice, but on the third time I followed it and ended up in a dead end construction zone that added 45 minutes. Meanwhile, the main road was completely fine with no traffic. This makes me wonder - are these AI algorithms just guessing wrong sometimes, or do they have some hidden goal like testing new routes for data? Has anyone else dealt with an algorithm that seemed to actively WORK AGAINST you instead of helping?

Honestly, I used to just trust whatever Maps told me and never questioned it, but that dead end construction zone thing really changed my mind. Ngl, I'm starting to think they're just using us as guinea pigs for their data collection.

Wait a dead end construction zone?? Google actually directed you into active construction?? That's insane, I've had it reroute me into some sketchy alleys before but never straight into a construction site. Those AI algorithms definitely have some hidden agenda, like they're testing new roads on us without asking first. I bet they're gathering data on side streets for their future self driving cars or something, that's the only explanation that makes sense. 45 minutes extra for a 20 minute drive is a huge waste of gas too, I'd be furious.
