Rant: My $40 meal planning app trapped me in a food bubble
I paid 40 bucks for this app that promises to optimize your grocery list and meal times. Thought it would save me money and stress. But after 3 weeks, I noticed it kept suggesting the same 5 meals from local chains I already visited. It was using my past purchases to predict what I'd eat, and I got stuck in a loop of frozen pizzas and cheap pasta. When I tried to search for new recipes, it hid anything outside my usual patterns. Now I'm mad because it cost me 40 bucks and I feel like my choices got narrowed down by some algorithm. Has anyone else had an app push you into a food rut without realizing it?

Yeah that's wild. I had a similar thing happen with a fitness tracker, it kept telling me to rest because I wasn't running enough, and I got stuck barely moving for two weeks before I realized it was just echoing my own laziness back at me.

The part about "it hid anything outside my usual patterns" really got me. Thats the scary thing right there, these apps are basically building a little jail for your taste buds based on what you already do. I had a similar thing with a recipe app that kept pushing the same kind of bland chicken dishes because I'd saved a few of those early on. It didnt help me try anything new, it just made me feel like I was stuck in a rut the app itself created.

The "jail for your taste buds" is a PERFECT way to put it. It's like the app is training you to be a worse cook by hiding anything that might challenge you.
