Italy was better off without the Roman Empire collapsing
When I visited Rome last spring and saw how overcrowded the Colosseum was with tourists, I realized if the Empire never fell we'd probably have way less chaos in city planning and crowd control there today, anyone else think the barbarian invasions made modern tourism unnecessarily difficult?

Think about it this way - without the Empire falling we wouldn't have those cool layers of history you see everywhere in Rome. The medieval stuff built on top of Roman ruins, the Renaissance churches using old columns, that's what makes the city so interesting to walk around. Crowded tourists are annoying for sure but the chaos in city planning is partly why Rome feels alive and real instead of some sterile planned capital.

Oh man, that's such a good point about the layers! It's wild how you can see a 2000 year old column just holding up some random medieval apartment building. But I gotta ask - do you think the chaos actually adds to the experience or is it just something we tell ourselves to feel better about the crowds and the scooters? Like, is there a real limit where it stops being charming and starts being a headache?
