Stood in a Cleveland train station for 2 hours and realized how much the car changed everything

Watching everyone schedule their whole day around a 10 minute late train got me thinking about what cities would look like if we never had personal vehicles for commuting, has anyone else tried mapping out how public transit would shape a city differently?

Great observation @mason_lopez, that's exactly what I noticed too. After moving to Chicago from a car-dependent town, I saw how the El stops became little villages with bakeries and laundromats right underneath.

schedule their whole day around a 10 minute late train" exactly. We build our lives around cars now. Cities would be tighter with everything closer together. Train stations become the main hubs with shops and apartments right there. No more giant parking lots wasting space. Cleveland would look totally different, probably more like European cities where people actually walk places.

wait have you guys actually lived in a city with good transit before? i spent a summer in Seoul and it blew my mind how everything just worked around the subway stops. bakeries, convenience stores, even little parks right at the exits. no wasted space for parking garages or giant lots. people just walked everywhere or took the train. cities would be way more walkable and dense for sure. imagine Cleveland with no cars - all those empty lots near downtown would be filled with housing and shops instead.
