That guy at a diner who changed how I see the Civil War
I was eating breakfast at this greasy spoon in Richmond last month, and this older dude just starts talking to me about the Civil War. He said his great-granddad fought for the Union, not the Confederacy, and he pulled out this worn photo from his wallet. He told me how his ancestor deserted after six months because he didn't believe in the cause. It stuck with me because it made me realize how many personal stories get lost in the big what ifs. Have you ever met someone with a family story that totally flipped your view on a historical event?

Ngl that's a cool story but it's not exactly a total paradigm shift. People have been deserting wars since wars existed. One dude's grandpa walking off because he didn't feel it doesn't really rewrite the whole Civil War narrative. It's more like a reminder that regular folks back then were just as complicated and messy as we are now, not some heroic monolith. Tbh the real takeaway is maybe he just wanted someone to show his old photo to over eggs.

Richmond is in Virginia though, not the deep South.

Read somewhere that Richmond was literally the capital of the Confederacy, so kinda deep South.
