The 2003 blackout that made me rethink my whole neighborhood

I was living near Cleveland when that big East Coast blackout hit back in August 2003. Everyone talks about the chaos, but what stuck with me is how the next day, the gas stations had no way to pump fuel and the ATMs were dead. My neighbor, this retired electrician named Bob, had a hand-crank radio and a paper map of all the local roads. He walked around passing out copies of that map to like 30 houses. It got me thinking how much we lean on systems we can't see. Has anyone else had a moment where a real event made you wonder how different things would be if we just lost certain tech for good?
