The Civil War reenactor who told me my Union impression was too clean

Back in 2019 at a Gettysburg event, this old guy walked up and pointed at my brand new wool coat and said I looked like I was heading to a parade, so I started swapping gear with the other guys, dragging it through dirt, and even sleeping in it once, and honestly the scuffed look changed how I read every primary source photo since, has anyone else had a gatekeeper moment that actually improved their research?

Ha, unless that photo was from 1863. Shiny brass was pretty standard early war.

Saw a buddy get roasted for shiny brass and he ended up redoing his whole kit from a real 1862 photo.
