Man, I had a Similar thing happen with an old fan. I found a tiny little flathead from my granddad's toolbox and it worked like a charm. @susanb34, your mention of that DIY show makes me think those old timers knew EXACTLY what they were doing. My screw ended up being left-hand threaded, took me a full 30 minutes to figure out why it wouldn't budge.

Honestly, a left-handed screw on a fan is just cruel. That's like the universe playing a prank on you while you're already sweating in a hot room with no fan. Took you 30 minutes? I would've launched that thing through the window after 10 and just bought a new one from the hardware store. Your granddad's tiny flathead sounds like a hero though, those old tools always seem to save the day when everything modern fails.
