Appreciation post: That random guy at a con who changed how I watch slice-of-life shows

I was standing in line at Anime Expo last month and this dude behind me said 'you know, the real plot is the quiet moments between the drama, not the big fights.' I thought he was full of it until I rewatched March Comes In Like a Lion and actually noticed the cooking scenes. Has anyone else had a stranger at a con or online drop a comment that totally shifted your take on a genre?

Take it from someone who learned this the hard way. I used to skip through slice-of-life shows thinking nothing happened. Then a guy at a con said "those quiet scenes are where the character development hides." He told me to watch the characters' hands not their faces. Now I pay attention to how Rei makes tea or how he eats his food. It changed everything for me. Trust the random con advice, it's usually free and solid.

@jana_jones I get where you're coming from but I actually see it the opposite way. Those cooking and tea scenes in March Comes In Like a Lion felt too slow for me until I realized they're just window dressing for the real show. The character development happens in the awkward silences, not in the hands or the food. When Rei stares at the ceiling before bed, that's where his headspace gets loud. The tea stuff is just filler that pads out the runtime. I'd rather watch him lose a shogi match than watch him chop carrots. Just my two cents.
