Fan subs vs official releases, a trip to a midnight premiere changed my mind

I used to be a hardcore fan sub person, I'd wait days for the good groups to drop their versions. Then last month a buddy dragged me to the 12 AM premiere of the new movie in the series I follow, and I watched the official English dub for the first time in years. The crowd reactions were wild, people laughing at jokes I never got from reading subtitles and gasping at moments I'd always skimmed past. Hearing the voice actors put real emotion into the lines made me realize I was missing a whole layer of the story just to avoid waiting an extra week. Now I'm going back and rewatching older episodes with the official release to see what else I missed, and honestly the translation choices feel way more natural than the literal ones. Does anyone else switch between sub and dub depending on the genre, or am I alone in this weird new phase?
