Completely different ending" makes me wonder if the original plan was less bleak. The show's whole mood is built on that final note of quiet acceptance. Changing it might have turned a classic into just another action cartoon.

Maybe the bleak ending is what made the show feel so real.

Bleak endings are a cop out. They mistake sadness for depth. That show earned its ending, but a lot of others just use darkness to seem smart. It's lazy writing dressed up as art.
