My anime club's big debate night went totally off the rails
We were at the library meeting room, trying to rank the best shonen arcs. Someone brought up the 'Naruto' fillers and a guy got so mad he yelled 'Sakura is useless!' and stormed out. It killed the vibe for like twenty minutes. Anyone else have a group watch or talk just fall apart like that?

Honestly, that sounds kind of fun. A little drama makes things memorable. Our club talks are always so polite they get boring.

Remember my friend's book club that got too polite and died out. They tried adding some debate like you said, jessica130, and it totally brought it back to life. A little spice really does keep things going.

The debate thing works magic if you keep it focused on the books themselves. Instead of arguing about real life stuff, my club debates whether the main character was totally wrong or totally right in their big choice. We had one night where half the room hated the ending and the other half loved it and that argument got so passionate people were flipping through pages to prove their points. It turned into everyone rereading the book just to argue better the next week. That kind of energy keeps people coming back because they want to see who wins the next round of the argument. Margaret's right that mean spirited debate can kill a club though, so it has to stay about the story not about insulting each other's taste.

Too much debate can kill a club just as fast. People start dreading the conflict and stop showing up. A calm talk about books is still a good thing.
