My brother told me to skip the first 12 episodes of 'One Piece' and just read a summary.
I did it and totally missed the emotional weight of the Arlong Park arc, so now I'm rewatching the whole East Blue saga. Has anyone else ruined an anime for themselves by taking bad viewing advice?

Honestly, skipping filler is the only way to survive some shows. Ever tried watching all of Naruto's endless dream sequences or Bleach's Bount arc? That's how you quit anime for good. Your brother gave you solid advice to avoid the early drag. The real emotional payoff in One Piece comes way later anyway, like in Water 7 or Marineford. Sometimes you need the summary to get to the good stuff faster.

But skipping the early stuff means missing the build up. The payoff hits harder when you've been with the crew from the start.

Exactly, the early grind IS the story. Skipping it just makes the big moments feel cheap.
