Tried rewatching an old classic from 2005 and totally bounced off it

I sat down to watch Ouran High School Host Club again after like 15 years, but the humor felt way more cringe than I remembered. The whole gender-bending gag with Haruhi just landed differently for me now as an adult. Has anyone else gone back to a beloved show from their teens and found it just didn't hit the same?

Funny you mention the gender bending thing. That's actually what made me realize how much the show leaned on tropes from a specific era of anime. Watched it again last year and saw it as more of a time capsule than anything. The comedy felt super reliant on misunderstandings and awkward situations that just felt forced in 2024. Still love the art style though, that part held up real good.

Same here @knight.dylan. I tried rewatching it a few months ago and tapped out after five episodes. The awkward silence gags just made me cringe instead of laugh. The art's still gorgeous though, no argument there.

Watching it now feels like that awkward phase where I thought cargo shorts were peak fashion (spoiler: they weren't).
