Got told my emails sounded angry. Made a simple change and replies tripled.

A client I've worked with for years finally told me last month that my emails came across as aggressive. I had no idea. She said it was the short sentences and lack of greetings. Started adding "hope you're doing well" at the top and "let me know what you think" at the bottom. Now people actually respond instead of just ignoring me. Anyone else get feedback about their tone that was a total surprise?

And you're telling me three-word replies are actually a problem? Because I've been doing that for probably a decade now. "Got it thanks" "Sounds good" "Will do" - I thought that was professional and efficient. Now I'm realizing people probably thought I was angry or short with them the whole time. I can't believe nobody told me sooner. Makes me wonder how many clients I've annoyed without even knowing it.

Wait, so my grumpy three-word replies aren't working for everyone?

Huh, it's funny how we all just assume our own way of doing things is fine. I've noticed the same pattern with people in line at stores or restaurants - everyone's in their own little world, rushing through interactions, and then they wonder why customer service is so bad. @the_wesley probably thought his emails were crisp and professional. But the thing is, most folks read short replies as annoyed or dismissive. You gotta at least throw in a "hope you're doing well" or something to soften it.
