I finally wrote an apology letter to my smart speaker for cursing it out during wifi outages.

I never sent it because talking to a gadget about my feelings seemed too absurd, even for me.

But isn't the router the thing that actually fails during an outage? I mean, the speaker just sits there, dumb without wifi. Still, yelling at stuff is pretty normal.

Totally, the router is absolutely the one that deserves the yelling. I've called mine way worse things than my speaker when it drops signal. It's just the face of the problem, sitting there with all its stupid blinking lights.

Read an article once that said we blame tech we can see, like routers, because it feels like we have a target. Miles_hall has it right about the blinking lights making it a perfect scapegoat. The piece argued the real issue is usually miles away in some server farm or with the ISP. Still doesn't stop me from giving my router a good glare when things cut out. It's just easier to be mad at the little box in the corner.
