I never told my neighbor I was sorry for the fire truck noise
It was 3 AM last July, and we got the call for a kitchen fire in our own building. The engines woke up the whole block, and I saw Mrs. Henderson's scared face at her window. I kept meaning to leave a note explaining, but I never did. Now I wave every time I see her, but it feels like a weak hello. Has anyone else left an apology unsaid because the moment just passed?

Did you ever end up telling her?

Honestly, I decided not to. In my view, some truths do more harm than good, and this felt like one of those times. She seemed happy, so I left it alone.

Man, that "more harm than good" thing hits home. Like, if she's moved on and doesn't seem upset, digging it up just to clear your own conscience might actually plant a worry that wasn't there. It's like pointing out a tiny scratch on someone's car they never noticed, now they can't unsee it. Sometimes letting sleeping dogs lie is the kinder move, even if it feels weird for you.
