My old coworker said one thing that made me finally write a draft

Ran into Pete from my old job at a gas station off I-35 last Tuesday, and he asked why I never sent that apology to our former boss after I quit in 2022. I told him it felt pointless, like the moment had passed, and Pete just shrugged and said, 'Apologies don't expire, they just get heavier.' That hit different because he wasn't being poetic, he'd lost his dad without saying sorry for a fight they had, and he still carries that weight 6 years later. I went home and wrote a draft to my boss about the project I walked out on, the one where I left them 2 days before the client demo. I haven't sent it yet, but just putting those words down made my stomach unclench for the first time in months. Has anyone else found that writing the letter, even unsent, does more than you expected, or is it just me?
