My uncle's napkin diagram about porch paint cost me 200 bucks
He told me to use exterior grade primer on my cedar railings and I skipped it because I figured one coat of premium paint was enough, now I'm scraping flakes off in March. Has anyone else learned the hard way that the cheap step your relative warns you about is usually the one that bites you?

My uncle did the same thing with pressure treated lumber on his deck stairs about 5 years back, told me the primer is what seals the tannins in or the paint just peels right off. I listened to him which is rare but I also watched my neighbor skip it on his fence and he was repainting within 8 months while mine still looks solid. The paint on raw wood never really bonds right no matter what the can says about being premium. That 30 dollar gallon of primer feels stupid to buy but it beats doing the whole job twice.
