Still owe my neighbor a real apology after 3 years of awkward hellos
I had this moment where I was totally wrong about my neighbor Mrs. Patterson. When she first moved in next door I figured she was just another nosy retiree who'd be up in my business all the time. Then her cat got out during a thunderstorm last April and I helped her look for it for like 2 hours. She told me later that she was actually a vet tech for 30 years and offered to check my dog's weird lump for free. Saved me a $200 vet bill just for a quick opinion. But I never actually told her I was sorry for being so standoffish those first couple years. Has anyone else had that thing where you judged someone totally wrong and then felt stupid about it but never apologized?

Isn't it funny how we can build whole stories about someone in our heads with zero evidence? I once spent six months avoiding my mailman because I decided he looked like the kind of guy who'd steal packages, then he returned a lost wallet of mine with cash still in it. Now I just assume everyone is secretly a decent person until proven otherwise, it saves my ego a lot of damage.

That's a good rule @gracec16, but hard to actually follow.
