That 5 minute chat with my sister's ex made me rethink a 6 year grudge

Ran into him at the gas station on Route 9 last Thursday, he said he still thinks about the camping trip where I lost his favorite knife and that he was more upset about how I never owned up to it than the knife itself. That whole time I figured he hated me for the ruined trip, not for the lie I told about it being stolen. Has anyone else had a conversation that completely flipped how you saw an old fight, and did you ever try to send that apology after the fact?
