Wrote my dad an apology 3 years ago and never mailed it, found it in a shoebox in my closet last Tuesday
The letter was about a fight we had in 2019 over me skipping his 60th birthday dinner in Austin to work a shift, and I still tear up reading the part where I admitted I was scared he would not care either way. If you have a letter like this sitting in a drawer, I want to know, did mailing it ever make things better or worse?
My mom had a birthday card for her sister sitting in a kitchen drawer for two years, still sealed, and when she finally sent it her sister called crying saying she'd been waiting. We hold onto these things like the silence is safer, but most of the time the other person is sitting there doing the exact same thing with their own unsent words. That fight in 2019 is five years old now, and the only way to know if he cared is to stop guessing and drop it in the mail.
