Had a long talk with a retired repairman after a fridge job

I was swapping a compressor on a 15 year old Whirlpool last Tuesday and the homeowner was a guy who did this stuff back in the 80s. He watched me work and then said 'you kids don't waste time diagnosing, you just throw parts at it.' That stung because he was right. I usually skip checking the start relay and just swap the whole board. Now I'm thinking about slowing down and actually testing components first. Anyone else get called out like that by an old timer?

Same thing happens at the grocery store when the self checkout blinks and people just slam the credit card again.

Yeah @jasonallen it's like people just mashing buttons instead of reading the screen first.

Guilty as charged. The other day I was so focused on hitting the right button I completely missed the big text that said "insert card here." Classic me.
