Just found out most modern fridges use way less power than I thought
I was looking at some old service records from the 1980s last week and saw the power draw on a standard Kenmore fridge from back then was around 700 watts running. I looked up a new Energy Star model from 2023 and it's under 200 watts. That surprised me given how much bigger and fancier they are now with ice makers and displays. Has anyone else noticed a big change in power use on the units you work on?

Got me thinking too. Always assumed newer was just more fancy and power hungry, but that 200 watt number really changed my mind on the whole thing.

That 700 watts down to 200 is wild. I see it in other places too. My grandpa's old window AC unit from the 70s would dim the lights when it kicked on, but my new one barely makes the ceiling fan flicker. Even light bulbs, a 60 watt incandescent is like a desk lamp now with LED bulbs using 9 watts. It makes you wonder how much power we threw away for decades just because nobody thought about it.
