OEM parts vs aftermarket for a 12 year old dryer, I picked wrong and paid for it
Did a dryer repair for a lady in Beaverton back in January, Whirlpool front loader, maybe 12 years old. The drum bearing was shot and I had to pick between the OEM kit at $89 or a generic one off the supply house shelf for $31. I went cheap because she was already antsy about the bill and I figured a bearing is a bearing. It lasted 11 days. Squealed worse than the old one and chewed up the felt seal. I ate the cost on the second visit and put in the OEM kit, plus I was out two hours of drive time I couldn't bill. My old boss used to say the cheap part always costs you the trip back, and he was right. But here is where I go back and forth. I have used aftermarket belts and thermostats for years with zero callbacks, so it is not like all generic parts are junk. Curious what you all do on old machines like this. Do you quote the OEM up front and let the customer decide, or do you just stop offering the cheap option once a machine hits a certain age? I want to hear from guys who run their own trucks.
