Overheard a fellow tech say we should charge for diagnostic fees up front

I was at a supply house waiting in line and heard two older repair guys talking. One said he charges a $65 diagnostic fee before he even walks in the door. He said it stops people from wasting his time on calls where they just want free advice. I've always just added it to the final bill if they go with the repair. But now I'm thinking I'm leaving money on the table when they say no to the fix. Has anyone else made the switch to collecting the diagnostic fee up front?

Yeah, collecting upfront weeds out the tire kickers for sure.

Hang on, $65 is pretty low for most markets these days.
