PSA: A bent paper clip saved me from a full dryer drum replacement

I had a call for a dryer that wouldn't spin, just a loud hum. The homeowner in Springfield said it started yesterday. I pulled it out, expecting the usual bad belt or idler pulley. Belt was fine, motor ran, but the drum was totally locked. I was about to tell them they needed a new drum bearing kit, which is a big job. On a hunch, I shined my light up inside the rear vent opening. Sure enough, a kid's sock was jammed deep in the blower wheel, stopping everything. My fingers were too big to grab it. I straightened out a paper clip from my pocket, hooked the sock, and yanked it free. The drum spun like new instantly. Saved a two hour teardown and a $150 part. What's the weirdest thing you've pulled out of an appliance that caused a major symptom?

So it was just that one sock causing the whole lockup? Makes you wonder how it got past the lint trap in the first place, right?

Notice how the smallest things cause the biggest problems. A single sock can break a whole machine, just like one tiny rock in a shoe ruins a hike. It's weird how often the real trouble comes from something you'd never think to check.

Used to think lint traps caught everything until a rogue sock shut down my whole laundry day.

And then you realize the lint trap wasn't even the problem, right? My buddy had the same thing happen. He pulled out this massive wad of wet fabric and it was like a whole t-shirt that had somehow slipped past the seal. The thing was wrapped around the drum like a python. @the_lee hit the nail on the head, one rogue sock is all it takes. Never underestimate what a single piece of clothing can do to a machine that costs more than your rent. Now he checks his pockets before every load like he's frisking himself for a crime.
