TIL a simple trick for those old Kenmore washer pumps that always seem to jam

I was working on a unit from 1998 that kept clogging with pet hair every two months, and the homeowner was ready to replace it. I cleaned the pump, sure, but then I also trimmed a quarter inch off the end of the drain hose where it connects inside the drum. That was four months ago, and she just called to say it's still running smooth. Has anyone else tried modifying the hose length to prevent recurring clogs?

That hose trim is a solid fix because it stops the lip from catching debris. You could also sand the new cut edge smooth so nothing snags on it at all. Makes a permanent solution even better.

Nice! I swapped the hose for a wider one.

Read a tip about using a heat gun on the cut edge. Supposedly melts any rough plastic bits so it's totally smooth. Might be overkill but sounds like a clean finish.

A wider hose plus sanding the cut edge gives you two layers of protection against snags.
