My old boss told me to never top a maple tree, but I ignored him on a big job in Portland

Three years later that same tree split right down the middle during a storm and cost the homeowner $2,800 to remove, so I guess he was right about that one bit of advice has anyone else had a lesson like that stick with them?

You know a buddy of mine topped his silver maple against everyones advice and it looked fine for two years until a windstorm took half his roof with it? Cost him way more than removal in the end.

Hate that for him, wood rot from topping is no joke.
