PSA: I finally get why some arborists swear by soil injections

I always thought feeding trees with spread fertilizer was enough, but a local pro changed my view! He showed me how injections put nutrients right where roots can use them, especially for stressed oaks. My own backyard pear tree perked up in weeks after we tried it. Before, I saw it as extra cost for no good reason. Now I see it's a solid fix for specific issues. It's not for every tree, but it sure works when you need it!

That method seems pretty rough on the tree though, stabbing all those holes in the root zone. Couldn't that just damage the roots it's trying to help? Heard it can make the tree lazy about growing a wide, strong root system too, since it gets everything handed to it in one spot. Might be better to just improve the whole soil area with good compost.

My arborist drilled 12 injection points around our maple tree. @nancyn69, the tree perked up in weeks, and we didn't see any root issues afterward.

How harmful are those injection holes to roots, honestly?

My neighbor did that to his oak last year, drilled eight holes for fertilizer. The tree looked great for a season, but now the grass around those spots is dead, like the roots just gave up spreading out. It reminds me of how we over-help kids sometimes, doing their projects for them. They get an A that one time, but they never learn how to actually do the work themselves. The tree might get a quick fix, but it's not building a healthy system for the long haul.
