Rant: I used to leave stumps ground too low and it wrecked my blades

For like 2 years I'd grind stumps down to ground level thinking that was best, but last month I buried a 6 inch chunk of oak and it took out $80 worth of teeth on my grinder. Now I leave them about 4 inches above grade and come back with a chainsaw instead - has anyone else dealt with surprise rocks or metal doing the same damage?

... sounds like me learning that lesson the hard way too, except I buried a chunk of rebar and thought I hit a diamond mine with all the sparks.

Did your buddy try to pull it out with a pair of pliers? I had a friend who did that once, thought he hit a buried treasure. He about yanked his arm out of socket when that rebar didn't budge an inch. Turns out it was an old fence post sunk in concrete. He spent the next hour cussing and digging it out with a shovel.

My buddy actually tried that exact thing with a rusty bolt he found sticking out of the ground in his backyard. He was convinced it was some kind of old farm equipment worth money or something. Idk, he probably watched too many treasure hunting shows on TV. He spent like 20 minutes cursing and pulling before he realized it was just a chunk of rebar someone buried years ago. I swear I felt secondhand embarrassment for him watching that whole thing go down.
